Undressing Mirror

The Undressing Mirror is a virtual undressing mirror created for the Arse Elektronika festival 2023.

In the context of sextech, the development of AI-powered tools bears a lot of potential for harmful misuse. So called deepnude software is being used to virtually undress non-consenting people. Those nural networks are mostly trained through nude photographs of people (with often exclusively female bodies) who have not agreed on being part of the training data. Those algorithms also inscribe a gender binary into their system in training and inference.

We developed a virtual undressing machine to show that this technology can be created and used ethically by using images of diverse and consenting individuals, both on the training and inference side, while excluding any assigned or assumed sex or gender in the process.
