3×3

A machine which moves steel spheres to display binary images. Developed as part of my master thesis.

spheres

From 3 to 4 in 5 steps.

Screens demand attention, colorful and full of movement. When flickering, they show unquestionable claims. The screen does not need to explain, it shows truth, it has power. We can spend half a lifetime in front of it. We consume, do not digest and push our mind into obesity. Screens shield us from reality. I want a honest screen, one which does not promise more than it can give. A device of the lowest resolution and the slowest refresh rate imaginable. The electromagnetic sphere display defuses the power of the display. It rebuilds the fourth wall by revealing that its output is an abstraction. It shows information and demands you to process it.
